Spring flowers, summer at the beach, Autumn leaves. They all make for great images. But don’t forget about winter. You don’t need to wait for it warm up before getting some new photos of your family or your children. Read my 5 reasons why I love winter photo sessions.
- Beautiful winter landscapes
Even if it’s not snowy or frosty, winter creates some beautiful landscapes. Bare trees and low sunlight give forest sessions a magical feeling. There may be fewer daylight hours during the winter, but the light we do have is is perfect for creating stunning images. It can be soft and dreamy or bold and brilliant, but winter sunlight is never boring. Of course, a little snow or frost makes everything more beautiful, and it’s worth being outside in the cold for a little while to get images in the icy wonderland.
2. The Timing in Perfect
After the craziness of Christmas, winter is a great time to get the whole family together for an extended family photo. During the summer it’s hard to make arrangements as everyone has plans on the weekends, but January and February tend to be quieter, so arranging a family photo session is a great excuse to get everyone together.
3. Happy Children
I love summer sessions, but sometimes with young children it’s difficult to schedule sessions. My favourite time of day to shoot is in the last few hour before the sun sets. The sun is lower is the sky and images get a dreamy, golden glow. No wonder photographers call it the golden hour. The trouble is, during the summer, the golden hour can be as late as 9pm! It doesn’t matter how lovely the light is, if the children are cranky because it’s past their bedtime it makes it much harder to get happy images. In winter the golden hour can be as early as 2pm, which means we can get beautiful light and happy children, its win-win.
4. Quieter Locations
During winter, popular locations such as parks or beaches are usually a lot quieter, meaning we have more location options and the children get to run around to their hearts content.
5. It’s a Great Excuse to Snuggle Up
Baby, it’s cold outside. But no worries, I have some cosy blankets to snuggle up in. Snuggling up is a great way to get natural looking images, as everyone forgets about the camera and the images show the true connection between loved ones.
6. It’s a Great Time to Save
