Before Your Session
Before the session, please loosen your babies nappy and place him or her in a loose outfit such as a sleepsuit. Since baby will be naked for some of the images, we want to avoid clothing marks on the skin. Try to keep baby awake and unfed before the session, so he or she arrives at the session ready for a feed and a sleep. Well fed, sleepy babies are happy to sleep whilst I pose them.
During Your Session
Newborn sessions can last between two and four hours. Most of this time will be for feeding and getting baby back to sleep. The actual images do not take this long, but it’s important that baby is happy and sleeping soundly. The newborn photography session, is much like life with a newborn, it is governed by the baby. During the session the room will be very warm, around 25 degrees, so baby will be comfortable. Dress in layers so you don’t become uncomfortable in the heat. Don’t worry if baby poops or wees on me or my props and outfits. I’m used to it. Everything used during a newborn session is washed thoroughly before it is reused. I will play white noise throughout the session to help baby sleep. It is helpful to have a dummy on hand to sooth baby when they are posed. Of course, this is entirely your decision. It is worth considering that using a dummy briefly during the session is very unlikely to interrupt feeding if you choose not to use a dummy going forward.
Your child’s safety is my number one priority. I am trained in newborn photography and I ensure I only pose your baby in ways that are comfortable and safe. If at any time during the session you feel uncomfortable with anything I am doing please let me know, as I want you to feel relaxed. For some poses I may ask you or your partner to support baby, For these poses I will take multiple images and use Photoshop to complete the look.
