Have you booked a newborn portrait session. These special sessions require a little extra planning to create the perfect, cuddly images of your tiny new arrival.
I recommend that you book your newborn session before your baby is born. That way I can ensure that I can save you a space. Of course, babies rarely arrive on their due date, so I make sure I keep a little flex in my diary each week to ensure I can accommodate late or early babies. When you book, I will arrange a quick chat on the phone so we can arrange the session and discuss any style preferences. Drop me a quick message when baby arrives, and we can secure a date when your little one is between 5 and 14 days old. Newborn sessions must take place at 14 days or younger. Younger babies sleep more and are happy to be placed in the curly positions that make newborn photography so special. After around two weeks babies become used to being out of the womb. They no longer need to curl up and they are more aware of their surroundings. This means they are far less likely to stay asleep when they are being posed.
What to Bring
I will provide props and outfits for the baby, however if you have a keepsake item such as a hand knitted blanket or heirloom outfit, please feel free to bring it so I can include it in the session. Please let me know if you would like to bring any other props or outfits to the session so we can discuss the styling prior to the session. You may want to bring a spare outfit for yourself and some old towels, baby will be naked during the session and accidents do happen.
What to Wear
I recommend wearing a plain, long-sleeved t shirt, blouse or shirt in white or cream to create a simple, elegant look that keeps the focus on baby. You can also bring a long-sleeved top in a dark colour for images on a black background. I may take some close ups of you holding the baby so pay attention to your hands. Ensure nails are tidy and there is no chipped nail polish. Men too should make sure nails are tidy as images with daddy holding baby in his hands are very popular.
Siblings are very welcome at my newborn sessions. I have some toys in the studio for children but depending on the age and number of children it may be worth having another grown up bring them for part of the session, as newborn session can last up to four hours and older children can get bored. For sibling images, depending on the ages of the children I may use a composite to get an image of all your children together: I will photograph the children separately and then combine the images in Photoshop to achieve the image safely. Light colours work best for sibling photos. For boys, chinos and a plain white vest of t shirt (no collar) or shirtless. For girls, light coloured skirt or trousers and a vest underneath their top. I will then use a wrap around their vest make a top.
At Home Sessions
I am happy to photograph your baby at home if you prefer. For home sessions, it is important that we discuss your style preferences before the session, as I will only be able to bring a limited number of props. Don’t worry if your home is messy. You have just had a baby and I would not expect anything else. If you have a nursery for baby, it is lovely to take some images there as they show the things that are special to your family. Images on mum and dads bed are always lovely. If you have a light-coloured bedspread or throw please put it on the bed ready for the session.
Your child’s safety is my number one priority. I am trained in newborn photography and I ensure I only pose your baby in ways that are comfortable and safe. If at any time during the session you feel uncomfortable with anything I am doing please let me know, as I want you to feel relaxed. For some poses I may ask you or your partner to support baby, For these poses I will take multiple images and use Photoshop to complete the look.
